Pets are active happy creatures, but like us they can develop painful arthritis. Arthritis occurs in 80% of our older pets, and many younger, active pets. Early on, arthritic pain is caused by cartilage damage and isn’t detectable with X-rays. Progressive arthritis causes bone damage and is detectible with X-rays. Your pet’s body reacts to bone and cartilage damage by sending white blood cells to clean up the debris. Unfortunately, the white blood cells make the problem worse because they release material intended to kill and dissolve invading bacteria. This material further damages the joints. Treat arthritis with medications that protect joints, the chondroprotectives (“chondro” means cartilage) that contain glucosamine and chondroitin. Use a chondroprotective with MSM if your pet is limping and in pain. Use Omega 3 fatty acids to help decrease your pet’s tendency to develop inflammation. Use prescription medications, such as Rimadyl and Previcox, when your veterinarian thinks they are necessary. To help your pet with arthritis, limit the time it spends walking on hard pavement, climbing stairs, and jumping. Instead, increase swimming and walking in sand.
