Thank goodness fleas and ticks are preventable. Nothing is worse than being bitten, developing allergies to flea saliva, and constantly scratching. In addition, fleas carry tapeworms, and dogs and cats as that groom themselves and swallow fleas become infected. Thus, fleas cause itching, allergies, and tapeworms; but ticks may actually be worse. Your pet won’t feel them bite, but ticks carry many fatal diseases, including Ehrlichia, Lyme Disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. These diseases infect both pets and people, and we can get them from the ticks that our pets bring in the house. It’s great that fleas and ticks are preventable. First, remove fleas and ticks from the environment. About 90% of a flea or tick’s lifetime is spent in grass, on carpet, or in leaf litter. Remove litter, vacuum, and treat carpets. Apply nontoxic borax where possible. Clean your pet’s bedding too. Then, clean your pet. Use any shampoo for 10 minutes and it will kill fleas on your pet. If you haven’t treated the environment, though, your pet will pick up fleas immediately after the bath. You can use special flea shampoos that have residual activity, or you can spritz your pet with lemon water after its bath. For many people, though, the most efficient method is using flea and tick medications to prevent a pet from being infected.
