Vaccines protect pets by preparing the immune system ahead of time. When the disease enters your pet’s body and it has been vaccinated, it has been pre-armed and is able to protect itself. In the past, many felt that the more vaccines used, the better disease prevention our pets had; but we now know that is not the case. Too many vaccines over stimulate the immune system and lead to auto-immune disorders. Use vaccines wisely by choosing to vaccinate for only those diseases your pet will actually be exposed to. Don’t begin vaccines until a pet is at least 8 weeks old, and don’t revaccinate automatically every year. Instead, have your veterinarian check your pet’s blood to see if it already has a protective level of antibodies. Many vaccines provide protection for several years, and in some cases, for a lifetime.
